mouse pointer speed changes mysteriously

randomly, my mouse pointer speed changes from fast to slow.
I have to reboot to get back to my setting.
how can I track this down??????

My USB optical randomly changes to a wireless.

What I've done is (Control Panel / Mouse) taken the mouse icon and
created a shortcut to my desktop; when it changed I pop into the mouse
properties and change it back.
