| Windows Registration Requires a Modem?? I'm trying to be a good customer and register my Windows XP. Here's the problem though...my computer has a modem, but is hooked up to DSL. I can use the internet and email with no problems. I fill out the registration information and go through the registration wizard and when it comes to the last page, it wants to dial a 1-800 number. My computer is using DSL, not the modem! If I disable the modem in computer manager, the registration wizard fails on the first page saying: "To use the online registration process, you have to do one of the following: -Install a modem -Set up an Internet connection -Configure a proxy connection If you already have a modem, check to make sure the modem is working properly." Why does it insist on using the modem? I already have an internet connection. The regwiz.exe application is allowed through my firewall. This is 2006, who is expected to use a dial-up modem anymore? I don't even have a land-line!! Get with the times Microsoft!! Does anyone have any suggestions? |

Activation is required and can also be done over the Internet and/or you can call a phone number and go through an automated system and/or speak to an actual human being. Sounds like something is not setup correc tly in your Internet Connection Settings - and there is no reason for you to 'register' anyway. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

| Re: Windows Registration Requires a Modem?? If you have the internet connection setup (via modem OR high speed DSL) then selecting internet as the means of registration should work (works for me). Alternatively you can do it using the toll free telepnone number shown and key in the codes as instructed by the voice message ( I've done that too, works well) BTW I have am using a modem to connect to the internet, as there is no other service available where I live. That is what I'm trying to figure out. |

Rock, I know that activation is what is mandatory and registration is not. I am just trying to figure out why Windows insists on using a modem that is not hooked up. I am able to surf the net and check email. My internet connection is set up correctly. It is no longer about registering. It is about figuring out why Windows is acting this way. Thanks. |

Dan, I know that sarcasm isn't always conveyed well in online messages, but that's what that line was. I know there's a large market of dial-up users. Microsoft and the rest of the world, however, is pushing to have more and more applications use the speed of more than dial-up. Graphic intensive websites, online application hosting, etc. etc. That is not the point of this discussion though. The point is, i do not use a modem, i even disabled my modem, yet the registration still insists on using said modem. This issue was not really about registering after I tried 3 times with no success. The point of asking for help on this issue is to figure out why Windows is being so (not to sound like a geek) but illogical. |
