Power options messed up, no 'Standby'

After reinstalling windows xp home (reformat) I no longer have the option to
'Standby' upon shutting down the computer (the 'standby' button is shaded
out). The only two options I have are 'Turn off' and 'Restart' I don't have
any options to standby in 'Control Panel', 'Power Options'.
I did have the option and could place the computer in the Standby mode
before the reinstallation of windows.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
