when computer shuts down

when i shut my computer off i lose all programs, seems like it resets itself
to when first purchased

What is the make/model? Anything new installed recently? How long has
this been happening? What was done to the computer just before this
started?

its a gateway,only thing installed was ie 7, about a month ago and nothing
else was done to it since
