screen flickers then shuts down....wtf?!?

oddest thing i have ever seen....when going into xp pro during logon
and after you login the screen will flicker black then be fine then
flicker black then be fine...this happens for about 3min or so and then
the system shuts down on its own. in order to restart i have to
manually pull the plug out of the back on the system case and put it
back in otherwise it doesnt turn on. if i go into safe mode or safe
with networking everything is fine..no flickering. im not someone new
to windows so the basics ive checked and it doesnt look like anything
wacky is running. i mean the fact it would run in safe and not regular
attributes to what a service that is not started in safe? i mean i went
through services and didnt see anything that jumped out at me should i
be looking at anything in particular?

at first thought it was power supply or ups but the fact you can boot
into safe mode boggles me. and plus the whole screen flickering thing
ive never seen before. we've run ca etrust anti and spyware progs and
some sort of java trojan was found in the cache which has apparently
been on the system since july or at least thats what the date says but
the fact real time would miss it and only a local would get it is also
fishy.

by far the most confusing thing ive ever seen...if y ou could shed any
light on this it would be much appreciated. thanks..

In Safe Mode > Device Manager delete any/all Display Adapters listed.
Reboot and Windows will redetect/reinstall the drivers.

It's probably a hardware problem, but you can do one more step to
eliminate the software side. Here are the troubleshooting steps for
this problem.

1. Update the video card drivers. Get the drivers from the card mftr.'s
website OR from the OEM's site for your specific model machine if you
have that sort of computer (Dell, HP, Sony, etc.) If updating the
drivers doesn't help and you still can't get it going in Regular Mode,
continue.

2. Connect the computer to a different monitor. Does the problem still
occur? If yes, then see the next step.

3. Go into Safe Mode and uninstall the current video card. Shut down the
machine, unplug it, and swap out the video card for a known-working
one. If that solves the problem, your original card is toast and needs
to be discarded.

If problems continue to occur after going through the above steps, other
hardware components are involved and it's time to move onto more
hardware t-shooting:

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA). Have
all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.
