Upgrade or Clean Install When Moving From Windows XP 2 XP Professi

I am going to move from Windows XP Home to XP Professional and was wondering
will a straight Upgrade to XP Pro clean up the OS as much as doing a Install.
I got an OEM version of XP along with the PC, but there was no install disk,
just a recovery disk to reset XP back to factory settings. It has been over
3 years since I started using this OS and it has been slowing down and some
things not working and takes a very along time to start up.
My problem is that I don't want to reset it back to factory settings as it
effects my Office Pro, so I bought a retail version of XP Professional and
was wanting to know whether doing just the upgrade will clean up the OS and
increase start up time or will the OS only be cleaned up after doing a fresh
install?

Back up your data and do a clean install. You'll be glad you did.

I trust you have the drivers for your motherboard, audio and video cards.

Clean for sure. I would also recommend getting yourself NLite so as to
slipstream SP3 into an XP Installation CD and install it that way.
You'll be REALLY glad you did.

Re: Upgrade or Clean Install When Moving From Windows XP 2 XP Professi

Personally I would never upgrade any incarnation of Windows; I always do a
clean install. Just make sure you have backed up all the important personal
files that you need to keep; that you have any drivers you may need; and any
software application discs. Install Windows XP Pro, then install your anti
virus, then go to windows update and install the latest updates.

This link, from my website, gives you a pictorial view of doing a lean
install.

If you have a retail version you can do an upgrade. This will *not* "clean
up" the OS. It will use basically the same registry, all the programs will
be maintained and it will run exactly as it does now.

If you do a "clean install:, this is basically the same as using your
Factory Settings CD - but there's another issue.

That Factory Settings restore CD has all of the system drivers, and your XP
Pro CD won't have any of them. This means that, unless you obtain and save
(say, to CD) all of the key drivers, such as chipset, video, network, modem,
sound, etc., key portions of the system hardware won't work properly or at
all following a clean install.

So, before you decide to do a clean install, take advantage of the fact
that you can tell what the hardware is and drivers are while the system is
actually running them. Go to the manufacturer's site and get them.

RE: Upgrade or Clean Install When Moving From Windows XP 2 XP Professi

Upgrading does not fix problems in a computer.
Simple mainternance does.
So, go for a clean install, if you are not happy with the exising OS.

Why?

Are you aware that XP Home and Professional are identical except that
Professional includes a few features (mostly related to security and
networking) missing from Home? Most home users don't need and would
never use these extra features and will see no benefits by upgrading.

For details go to

No. The upgrade from Home to Professional is the easiest and most
likely successful of all possible XP upgrades, but the one time I
recommend against it is if the installation is already experiencing
problems.
