A problem that I share with others is that the Nvidia Control panel fails to
open. This was cured when I did a registry fix to enable an older "Classic
Control Panel". After a second try to open the Classic version it too will
not open.

I now cannot change the brightness or contrast of either of my two displays
as the control panel when it was working adjusted the levels beyond the
display's own manual adjustment.

Despite uninstalling, cleaning out old drivers and reinstalling the driver
(new and old) I cannot get the Nvidia control panel to open.

This is why I am wanting to know if I can "reset" the NVidia to its default
through the XP registry?

Hopefully something here will work.

Try registering these files:
Open the Run box and, one at a time, enter:
regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvcpl.dll
regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvcpl.cpl

See if you can open the nVidia Control Panel
manually. Open the Run box and enter:
%SystemRoot%\system32\nvcplui.exe

Are you sure you've got the latest driver?

Tried your suggestion with the following errors:

nvcpl.dll

DllRegisterServer in C:\windows\system32\nvcpl.dll failed
Return code was 0x80070005

nvcpl.cpl
message received was:

C:\windows\system32\nvcpl.cpl was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry
point ws not found.

C:\windows\system32\nvcpl.cpl does not appear to be a .dll or .ocx file.

what does this mean?

some bios's have the
option to disable agp
and enable pci video.

however, the issue
you have is ultimately
one that needs to be
answered by the nvidia
techs.

That's not actually an error, but a message. It
means that the file cannot be registered. That
just eliminates one possibility.

That's a problem. Usually it is recomended to
uninstall nVidia, reboot and install the latest
version. (Because it is easier than trying to
figure out what the actual problem is) But since
you said you already did that you're going to
find it hard to solve this problem. Keep looking.
