Apps running at startup

How can I tell what apps/services are running at startup?

When my Windows XP SP3 system boots up, the CPU usage is pegged at 100% for
about 3-5 minutes.

When I look under Processes in Task Mnanager, I see the process svchost.exe
but it is my understanding this is just a process shell for some DLL that it
does not specifically identify.

I checked the startup folder for all users (C:\Documents and
Settings\dave\Start Menu\Programs\Startup) and the only file in this folder
is desktop.ini.

How can I tell what app or service is actually chewing up my CPU at startup?

RE: Apps running at startup

tAt the command prompt type: tasklist /svc
AT the first column "Image name" svchost.exe, the opposite column "Services"
are sevices running under it.

Or you can use Process explorer with good instruction here:
What is svchost.exe And Why Is It Running?

Hi Dave,

I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Lipman's advice. Autoruns gives you a very
comprehensive look at what runs at startup:

I thought I'd have a look at this

It gives a lot of information, but I thought I would look at the help to
find out exactly how to drive it, but I got a message from Internet Explorer
about unable to locate file.

Does anyone know why?

It could even be your PC looking for a USB device you previously
used/installed but have turned off at the moment, or perhaps, no longer
have.

Re: Apps running at startup

Use this great little app:

StartupRun 1.22 30 KB Freeware
Download page: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/strun.html
All Utilities: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/index.html

quote/
The StartupRun utility displays the list of all applications that are loaded automatically when
Windows boots. For each application, additional information is displayed (Product Name, File
Version, Description, and Company Name), in order to allow you to easily identify the applications
that are loaded at Windows startup. if StartupRun identifies a spyware or adware program that runs
at startup, it automatically paints it in pink color. In addition, you are allowed to Edit, disable,
enable and delete the selected startup entries. You can also save the list of startup items into a
text or html files, and even add a new startup entry to the Registry.

Re: Apps running at startup

You need to go to properties of autoruns.chm and unblock it.
