Compress old files

It appears that WinXp automatically compresses files that haven't been open
for a long time. Is there anyway I can prevent this from happening on an
external HD?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Bill

Re: Compress old files

File compression only occurs IF you Run DiskCleanup AND allow it to
compress old files. You get to choose!

Re: Compress old files

Bob

It did not give a choice on my machine. See my post to this
thread, That solved the slow assessment of how much space
might be gained by running Disk CleanUp. My situation was by
no means unique.

Re: Compress old files

When I run DiskCleanup, I do not see any way to inhibit "compress old
files". Could you please be more specific.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Bill

Re: Compress old files

On a default install, I believe you will find a check box in the "Files
to Delete" area.
