I noticed that in "my computer" there is an option for compressing files to
save room. Is this a good idea and how complicated would that make looking
at - say - My Pictures folder or music or whatever. Have no clue.

Unless you have issues with drive space, it's pretty much a waste of time.

Also not all files compress. One needs to test and observe the results.
Compressing current regularly accessed files would also not be a
good idea.

I imagine you are aware of these points. I have mentioned them
for the benefit of the OP.
