I am running Win XP Pro...When I right-click on Start and select Explore, my
system will hang...After re-booting, I select My Computer and left click on
the disk drive, the file names appear and I can select the files.

Your advise will be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Most likely caused for an ill behaved context menu handler. See this link:
