Memory Card Reader Not Working in XP

Here's the story.

I've owend a memory card reader for about a year. It worked with this
computer when I first bought it, but at some point seemed to stop working.

At the moment, when I plug the card reader in, all of the logical drives
will come up fine, but the computer can't seem to tell when a memory card has
been inserted and so won't read it.

Here are the steps I've taken so far to elucidate the problem:

1. Checked the memory card reader - works fine when plugged into other
computers running XP.
2. Tried a new memory card reader - same problem. Also works when plugged
into another computer.
3. Checked all of the computer's USB ports - all work fine with other
devices - no bad ports among them.
4. Checked all my motherboard drivers are up to date. (They are).
5. Ultimately, upgraded the motherboard/RAM/videocard/hard drive (was going
to do this anyway) but transferred all of my XP OS files and personal files
directly over.

Overall, I'm getting the impression the problem is an XP software driver
problem as opposed to a hardware problem. Has anyone been through similar
problems, and if so, how have they fixed them?

Thanks all in advance.

RE: Memory Card Reader Not Working in XP

go to run type in "services.msc" and see if smartcard service is running if
not then start it and try again

RE: Memory Card Reader Not Working in XP

Thanks Dan.

I should have added this was one of the things that I have checked
previously, so it is currently running. I have just double-checked that its
set to run automatically also - which it is.

RE: Memory Card Reader Not Working in XP

Happened to me recently also! My IOGear multi-slot reader completely
stopped working. Fortunately, I got it replaced.

Other things to try:

1) Boot your XP with the reader plugged in. Happens to my PC that sometimes
the XP will not load the drivers after XP has been on.

2) Clear out reader the entries in Disk drives, Storage volumes and Universal
Serial Bus controllers sections.

Re: Memory Card Reader Not Working in XP

Do as Yves suggested. While the years Windows collects a large
number of items here, so it may be a lot of work.

A faster way to give the USB storage a new start is Microsoft's
commandline tool DEVCON and and a cleanup script:

DEVCON:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=311272

RenewUSB.bat:
http://www.robvanderwoude.com/devcon.html

Create a System Restor point before...

Re: Memory Card Reader Not Working in XP

SmartCard and flash cards are completely different devices. There
is no releation between the smartcard service and any kind of USB
storage devices as a Memory Card Reader is.

Re: Memory Card Reader Not Working in XP

Uwe, thanks for your help.

How on earth do you actually run that batch file? I've downloaded devcon
fine but down't know how to get it to run that file. I've tried simply
cutting and pasting the text from the file into the command line in XP but
I'm pretty sure that's not how i should be done....

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Pete

Re: Memory Card Reader Not Working in XP

Managed to do it.

Didn't run the batch file - ended up just using the devcon command line
('devcon remove @usb\*' 'devcon rescan'). This scrubbed all my USB ports and
rescanned them - and now the memory card reader works perfectly. Thanks
everybody for your help.

Sincerely,
Pete
