I keep getting an error message while installing sp2. It says ftp.error.
That it is in use by another program and I should close the program and retry
or cancel. Nothing else is running on my system. I am frustrated, can
someone give me an idea what is wrong. Running xp home

How are you trying to install SP2? Through windows update site? If so try
downloading the full installation package or ordering the SP2 CD for the
cost of shipping.

I downloaded a fresh copy from the website and tried to install it but
received the same error message. The file c:/windows/system32/ftp.exe is
open or in use by another program. Close all applications and click retry .

Clicking retry doesn't do anything except repeat the message.

Any other ideas?

Well not really any to address that particular error. Is the system running
ok with no problems and is it free from all malware? For SP2 to apply
properly the system needs to be running well and clean.

One other option is to create a slipstreamed installation CD including SP2
in it, then do a clean install with that CD. Autostreamer makes
slipstreaming relatively simple.
