USB2 Problem

Hi, I am using USB2 devices on my XP system. I have the USB2 drivers
installed. My problem is that until a week ago things were running fine, now
however, all USB2 ports are running at USB1 speeds which is infuriating me. I
have not made any system changes or installed any new software to make this
happen. I have uninstalled ALL USB drivers then re-installed them but things
are still running at the slower rate.

PLEASE HELP before i lose what hair I have left

Kind regards,

Phil

RE: USB2 Problem

Hi, Should also say... I've tried plugging devices into ALL ports, and the
USB port driver is listed as being that of the Enhanced flavour.

Re: USB2 Problem

How are determining that the peripherals are running at Full Speed
instead of High Speed - the pop-up msg "This device can run faster...?
What drivers did your re-install, the motherboard Chipset package
or the peripheral drivers ?
USB tends to build up "Phantom Device" instances. You may want
to add the system environment variable:
DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices
and set it's value =1
Open Device Manager, Click View, tic/check "Show Hidden Devices"
Check all categories except System, Sound and Non-Plug and Play
and look for entries shown in diminished tone or grayed out. These
are Phantoms that can be safely deleted.

Re: USB2 Problem

Hi and thanks,

Ok, I've done all you suggested regards phantom devices and still no change.

When plugging in the devices it was telling me 'This devices can run
faster....', however this has now stopped but I'm still not getting the
speeds I should or did previously. Motherboard settings are also as they
should be.

Re: USB2 Problem

Download a Microsoft tool called UVCView. It allows you to
graphically view your USB controller/device map. If your devices
are shown served from the Enhanced controller they are using
USB2.0. Any devices shown served from a "Non" enhanced
controller/Root Hub are USB1(.1) Full Speed.

Re: USB2 Problem

Hi,

Ok all devices show up in the Enhanced list. However, the speed problem is
still apparent. To explain what I'm doing.... I have a 1 gig memory card
which I use in a mobile phone for MP3 playback. Previously it would take
approx 10 minutes to erase and refill the card. Now it takes circa 60 minutes.

Re: USB2 Problem

What you are experiencing may not be unusual. I have a drawer full
of Thumb Drives, SD cards, Memory Sticks.... On some I can delete
content quickly on others it takes a long time. Flash memory devices
are fast for reading, but writing and erasing is noticeably slower.
There are performance differences when using different format types
and cluster sizes on Flash Memory devices.
