| How to repartition WinXp hdd? Folks, My hdd partition shows free space 29.8 GB, of 74.3 GB. How can I repartition the total space so that the used space is left intact, free space is reduced, and new unpartition space is created? Would like to create a new partition for a Windows Vista install. Thanks, -BEA |

| Re: How to repartition WinXp hdd? XP has no native capability to "Shrink" Basic volumes. You'll need a disk management program. Personally, I use Acronis Disk Director. However, unless you plan on future disk management uses it's hard to justify a purchase for a single operation. You might want to check on BootItNG which has a full featured trial. It's good, but it's interface can be a little clunky/hard to navigate. Vista will take up a good bit of disk space on it's own ( ~6.0 Gig ) It may be a good idea to purchase a second dedicated drive to use with Windows Vista. I've seen 100-Gigabyte 7200RPM drives at Office supply stores for under $80. | Re: How to repartition WinXp hdd? So how is you come to have this free space? What exactly is shown in Disk Management for this drive? You can always create a new partition using the free space, which would seem to be what you want. The only way to do what you want is with third-party software. Partition Magic is the best-known such program, but there are freeware/shareware alternatives. One such program is BootIt Next Generation. It's shareware, but comes with a free 30-day trial, so you should be able to do what you want within that 30 days. I haven't used it myself (because I've never needed to use *any* such program), but it comes highly recommended by several other MVPs here. Whatever software you use, make sure you have a good backup before beginning. Although there's no reason to expect a problem, things *can* go wrong. -- Ken Blake - Microsoft MVP Windows: Shell/User Please reply to the newsgroup |

| Re: How to repartition WinXp hdd? Before you read that read about Disk Management in help, You propose to expand your partition, then create a new second partition, when you allready have the space to create a new partion using the free space. Your making life difficult for yourself "BEA" <BEA@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:66734965-F73B-44D3-B610-25E9A4B419D9@microsoft.com... > Folks, > > Seems this has been asked many times in the past, and FYI a really good > sol'n is http://mlf.linux.rulez.org/mlf/ezaz/ntfsresize.html . > > Thanks, > BEA > > "BEA" wrote: > > > Folks, > > > > My hdd partition shows free space 29.8 GB, of 74.3 GB. I would defrag, visit www.terabyteunlimited.com and read up on bootitng then download the trial version and make a bootable media (cd or floppy) per their instructions. When you boot, click on cancel rather than install. This will put you in maintenance mode. From there you should be able to to navigate to what you want. I would advise making a backup to dvd if you have a burner (or multiple cd's). Dave Cohen |
