File details no longer shown in task pane

When I open a folder on my home PC (XP Pro SP2), the "Details" box in the task pane on the left hand side shows details of the selected file, including file size and date of last change.

On my work PC (also XP Pro SP2), this box no longer shows file size and date, although I am sure it used to. It just shows the filename and type of file (e.g. "Text Document"). The only exception to this is if I select a graphics file like a bmp, then the full details are shown including x,y pixel size of the bmp and a thumbnail.

Does anyone know a way to restore the operation so that all details of the file are shown?
