On Re-Install of XPHome, Files and Setting Transfer Wizard won'trecognize data saved to external hard drive

I had to re-install XPhome to resolve some issues. Installation went
fine until I tried to recover my files and settings saved to an external
hard drive. When I try to recover my settings and direct it to the
folder where Img00001.dat and Img00002.dat are stored, it tells me there
is no data there. Moving the folder USMT2.UNC to desktop had no effect.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 4500with a P4 2.8, 768 memory.

Can anyone tell me how to overcome this problem?

TYIA

Re: On Re-Install of XPHome, Files and Setting Transfer Wizard won't recognize data saved to external hard drive

don't quite remember, but I think you have to specify either the USMT2.UNC
or the folder above it for restore to work

Re: On Re-Install of XPHome, Files and Setting Transfer Wizard won'trecognize data sa

I had this problem after saving with Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in XP Home and then installing XP Pro. I tried altering permissions and other fixes that didn't work, including using FastConv. Each time I got the error message that the folder didn't contain the data. Here's how I finally defeated the problem:
Run "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" (FAST) on the NEW computer, but check the box for "Old Computer". Check the box to "Let me select a custom list of files..." , then remove all of the files and file types to be included in the backup except for "Display Properties" or some other entry, so the backup will be small and take only a short time. FAST will then run and create the usual folder "USMT2.UNC" which contains folders "status" and "IMG00001.DAT". Now copy all the IMG***.DAT" files from your original backup from your "Old Computer", and past them into your new USMT2.UNC that you just created with your new system - overwriting the "IMG00001.DAT" that you just created. Now run FAST and point it to the new USMT2.UNC with the old "IMG***.DAT" files, and FAST will now be tricked into running the update without protest.
This worked for me when nothing else would read the folders.
