| Image restore to replacement hard drive ? Will WinXP Pro allow one to do an image backup of a hard drive (scsi) and then replace the hard drive and restore the image onto the replacement hard drive (same computer, just different HD) ? Or will the built-in WinXP licensing features not allow this ? A scsi drive is going bad on one workstation and it would be nice if we could avoid installing the OS from scratch and having to resinstall all of the apps. TIA ... |

| Re: Image restore to replacement hard drive ? Windows XP (any version) does not have any Image Backup utilities built-in. You can use NTBackup but that is not an image backup. You need to purchase a third-party application that permits that. There a many out there. One that many use is www.acronis.com TrueImage. You can also create a hidden partition and use any Partition Managers and clone the partition you wish to save. Yes, drive imaging to a new HD is fine. It might invoke activation, however, depending on what other changes were made after the last time it was activated. There is a way around that by keeping the same volume serial number. I don't know if that happens just by virtue of the new drive being restored from an image. See this article by the late Alex Nichol on activation. Scroll to the section on formatting a drive. http://aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm |
