Start Button menu disappears

The menu that opens when I hit the Start has begun blinking off immediately
on opening. This happens whether or not I even move the cursor. It seems to
blink off the first time I click Start, but stay stable if I click it
another time...or another 3 or 4 times. But if I go elsewhere on my screen
and then back to the Start button, I start all over with the blink-out.

Anybody have a clue? I'm running XP Media Edition, which my geek thinks is
vastly inferior to XP Pro, on a Dell Dimension 9150.

You're geek doesn't know much. Media edition is based on XP Pro with added
features for media. The one thing XP Pro has that Media doesn't is the
ability to join a domain.

Re: Start Button menu disappears

Try deleting IconCache.db.

After deleting IconCache.db, it will be automatically recreated.

Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...

%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data

Right click IconCache.db and select Delete.

I'll add my voice to the others who point out that you need to replace your
geek. XP Media Edition is inferior to XP Professional in a single repect--it
can not join a domain--and since *very* few home users need to join a
domain, from a practical standpoint, to home users it isn't inferior at all.

In all other respects, XP Media Center is XP Professional, with extra
features.

Re: Start Button menu disappears

Thanks, Wesley. Your instructions were clear and easy to follow....but
didn't yield the desired result. Start menu still flashes on for a
micro-second the first time, then stays up (normal behavior) the second time
I click it. Not the end of the world, but a nuisance.

Any other ideas?

And Ken...THANK YOU. I am relieved to know the OS is not the likely problem.
I SO do not want to have to install a new OS!

Thank you so much. Your directions were clear and easy to follow, but
deleting the IconCache did not fix the problem. Start menu still disappears
first time I click it, stays up after that.

Any other ideas?

And Ken, thank you for reassurance about Media Edition. I *SO* did not want
to think about changing OS!

Again, is it a laptop??? Do you use a mouse or the laptop's built-in
"mouse"?
