Broken Windows Update

I am having an issue with windows updates. Everytime I restart, it says
I have new updates available; the same ones everytime, the MSXML ones.
I install them, the next time I restart it says I have to download them
again. I checked the troubleshooter and the FAQ and anything else I can
think of but I'm not having any luck finding solutions. Any ideas?

Re: Broken Windows Update

Also, I did install a new HD. I formatted it NTFS. Everytime I update
it seems like it throws a new folder in there named something
1297d38e15204c617c04bc and it has a file that starts with msxml. Not
sure if that means anything.

Is this the update you're talking about?

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-071: Vulnerability in Microsoft XML Core
Services Could Allow Remote Code Execution (928088):
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS06-071.mspx

If so, see this KB for more details.

That's a folder holding an installation log file for the MSXML update. It
should be deleted at the end of the install but for some reason with this
update it's not. It's ok to delete.

I suggest you post your question to the experts in the windows update
newsgroup. Look around first at the posts there to see if this issue has
been addressed before posting a new question.

I've had the same problem for sometime now. I've put screen shot of my
problem with windows updates here:

http://12000.org/tmp/101806/

It still tells me I need to update security KB923980 even though I went
through the installation many times.

I now simply ignore windows update messages, click cancel on it.

It is simply broken. MS must be too busy with VISTA to fix this.

Nasser

Re: Broken Windows Update

Uninstall the previous MSXML update ... KB925672, if it's listed in
Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
Restart the system.
Then install KB927978
Issue solved. KB923980 is NOT the MSXML update.
KB927978 is.
Next !

Re: Broken Windows Update

KB923980 Workaround ... if it's showing in Add/Remove Programs in the
Control Panel as being installed and you're running XP Home Edition ...

Show hidden files, folders, and system files
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...l62.html#winxp

Navigate to WINDOWS\$hf_mig$
Open the KB923980 folder
Open the SP2QFE folder
*Right* click nwapi32.dll
Choose COPY
Navigate to WINDOWS\system32
*Right* click a blank space and choose PASTE
Restart the system

If the Client Service for NetWare is going to be used in the future,
suggest you register the .dll by going to Start > Run > type in

regsvr nwapi32.dll

Click OK or press Enter
