Hi Bob,

That is not normal. Programs should terminate when closed. How are
they being closed? Are they crashing at any time?

Any more my first suspect is Norton. Try disabling it completely and
see if the programs still remain in memory. Or try booting to Safe Mode
and see if you still have the same problem.

Re: closed programs still running in task manager

Closing a Word file does not close Word. You need to close Word.

Hope this helps.

Re: closed programs still running in task manager

That would probably be caused by some misbehaving third party add-in for
Office. Your gf clicks the X to close the program but the add-in "hangs"
and so the program doesn't actually finish closing, then she opens
another file and a new instance of the program is started, over and over
till she reboot and kills all the hung applications. So start checking
the add-in's in Office. Adobe acrobat can cause issues like this or
"Office-Add-in" virus scanners, are another bad problem.

Re: closed programs still running in task manager

I have same problem with several programs. Some close no problem, some close but are still carrying a pid and listed in windows task manager or procexp.

I have no idea what is causing this and see this now on two separate machines

Re: closed programs still running in task manager

I am having exactly the same problem. Mine is not specific to Office applications, pretty much most things when I start them and close the application by pressing "X" the program is still running in the processes tab of task manager. As an example I had 12 instances of Outlook running earlier, loads of MSAccess, 2 of Coreldraw... all applications I use.

If anyone can shed some light i would be grateful. The only recent changes I have made to my system are XP Service Pack 3 and installed Norton 360 version 2.

Any help appreciated.

Neil

Re: closed programs still running in task manager

I have exactly the same problem and can't figure it out yet. It happens with several applictions as well, adobe photoshop, ms office, studio (pinnacle), etc... Please if someone finds out how to correct or solve this, please post it.
