Please can you help?

Summary: Windows XP Home pc, motherboard failed, new motherboard and XP
Home wouldn't boot. Tried fixes and tips, none worked. Ended up buying XP
Pro upgrade but can't get this to show us how to upgrade during the bootup
screen.

How do we choose Upgrade XP Home from the bootup using Windows Pro Upgrade
that we just bought.


Details:
We have a pc with XP Home, the motherboard broke (Emachines 220). We bought
a new motherboard with nearly identical chipsets. XP Home failed on bootup,
would go into a continuous restart loop. Starting in Safe Mode I could see
it loading the drivers (text echo) and every time it would fail in the same
place MUP.SYS.

Unfortunately Emachines warranty was up and they don't supply Windows CD
with the pc. So we tried using another XP home cd just to repair our
install. This wouldn't work.

So we tried some internet tips and tricks. These didn't fix it either.

We have a Win XP Pro CD from our other pc so we tried that, this installed a
side-by-side installation so we could dual boot. It was purely to see if
the data was ok, if the hard drive had trashed everything or not. The data
looked fine. But even in Windows we couldn't see anything obviously wrong.

Then we bought Win XP Pro upgrade and we figured this would upgrade our
installation, except it doesn't offer this option when booting from the CD.
How can we get it to upgrade the original Windows XP Home installation? We
would like to not have to reinstall everything again.

If the Home install won't boot, you can't upgrade it. You will have to save
data manually, and reinstall all apps to the Pro install.
Since you installed Pro to the same hard drive as the Home version, you
would need the option of running Home setup again, to 'Repair' it before it
would boot.
E-machines have a 'restore to factory default' option, but that neither
repairs the Home nor saves the data. You are forced to rebuild, since the
e-machine had no repair option.(and you failed to make a backup)

Slave your hd to the other PC in order to recover data. (you may have to
take ownership, see win help)
Then decide how you want to proceed with the broken PC.

Thanks for the reply Mark. You are spot on about the Emachines crappy
restore facility which wipes all the user data and programs. Whoever thinks
up these "solutions" should be kicked hard in the ass! ;-)

It had put us off buying any Emachine PC's until we realised it was actually
Microsoft's fault for supplying a modern operating system without a backup
and restore facility. And we have learned that other builders have the same
"delete everything and clean install with none of your useful programs"
tool.

All of this backup and restore of all data and useful programs should be
fully automated, and the user should only be asked for a blank DVD or the
option of saving to another computer's hard drive on their network. Or to a
USB pen drive, or USB removable hard drive, etc.

Now it won't update at the Windows website, and the KB is not finding
anything, lol.

It's all 1 pc and only 1 hard drive. We now have a Windows directory (XP
Home) and a Win2008 directory (XP Pro).

We have a server now, and I've already backed up all the user's data onto
the server. It's just the pain of having to reinstall on a clean HD, and
then spend a few hours nursing it through program installs, updates, etc.

Emachines always fail when your install a new motherboard. Their version of windows is tied to the
BIOS chip.
If you had wanted it to work, you would have had to buy the exact MO replacement from Emachine at an
unreasonable $$.
This is not the fault of MS, but rather Emachine design.

Now that you have a MS (even though it is upgrade) version of Windows, you will have the option for
a repair installation in the future. Now you need to borrow a previous copy of Windows to show to
the system during the "fresh install".
