Power Options - Monitor Won't Turn Off

I'm running Windows XP Home. The power options for my computer is set to
turn my monitor off after 10 mins - power saving. After 10 minutes, instead
of turning the monitor off, it just goes back to the desktop. It was working
fine yesterday. I have tried changing the minutes, but it just won't work.
Any help would be appreciated. I'll check again tomorrow and see if it
happens again. I have recently had Windows XP reinstalled, due to a problem
with my computer. Everything was working fine until the monitor problem
today.

Did you reboot and test it?

Re: Power Options - Monitor Won't Turn Off

I turned the computer on this morning and left it alone. The monitor turned
off. I left the computer alone for a hour and I came back and instead of the
monitor being off, the screensaver was running.

Re: Power Options - Monitor Won't Turn Off

I turned off the screensaver and the monitor turned off. I changed the
screensaver and the monitor still would not turn off. I want my screensaver
on, as well as the monitor turning off. I do not want to choose one or the
other. How do I fix it? I'm a novice when it comes to computers - the
simpler the solution, the better.

I'm confused. You want your screensaver on and the monitor off? How can that
be?

Re: Power Options - Monitor Won't Turn Off

I'm sorry. What I meant was that after the screensaver runs for 10 minutes,
the power saving kicks in and the monitor turns off or is on standby - under
the power saving options in the control panel - turn off monitor, hard disks.
The light on the monitor is orange instead of green.

Re: Power Options - Monitor Won't Turn Off

Unfortunately, I believe the power off option sees the screensaver as activity and hence it does not
want to turn off the monitor.
Since screensaver are "entertainment only" now, I would give up on the screensaver.

Re: Power Options - Monitor Won't Turn Off

I don't understand what is meant by entertainment only. I do not understand
how it happened. It was working fine a couple of days ago. I regularly scan
for viruses.

Re: Power Options - Monitor Won't Turn Off

I have checked and changed the various settings, but it will not work. The
monitor will only power save if the screensaver is off.

When the monitor light is orange the power IS off.

Try one of the non-3d screensavers?

Re: Power Options - Monitor Won't Turn Off

I have tried all the screensavers and it won't work. I know that when the
light is orange, the power is off. The light also goes orange, when the
power saving starts. I have decided to turn the power saving setting to
never and just let the screensaver run.

There's always the power button (DUH) if you know you're going to be
away from the keyboard for a while.

Re: Power Options - Monitor Won't Turn Off

I know that - I'm not stupid. I set it to never and I've decided to leave it
that way.
