Restart, or reboot problem

Hi Readers,
I have this problem in restarting when needed to , like
when installing updates & apps etc.
i have had it for a while , not knowing whether it is a software or hardware
fault.

I have a fresh install of XP Pro SP3, just a fews days old, the system
works perfectly otherwise, fully updatated . I tend to think it is a
hardware fault.
have already checked out Ram , 2 legs @ 512 + 2legs @ 256

my system is a Dell Dimension 4600i P4 3g 1.5 Ram. 3 separate HDD.
could it possibly be the button on the front panel

deejaydee

Describe the problem in detail.

What you do, what it does, etc.

You forgot to describe what the problem is, exactly, and what you are doing
when the problem occurs.
Example- "I try to restart by clicking Start | Turn off Computer | Restart.
Then the computer says "Logging off ...", but just hangs there. No error
message."
{Your actual experience - what you do; what the computer does; is there an
error message/ if so, what is the exact wording of the message? Also, what,
if anything, have you already done to try to "fix" the problem.}

Plain simple it does not restart, it sort of hangs yet it doesnt always
happen the indicator light is on , then it dies . I start anew everything
appears normal

Are you dense?

"it does not restart". AFTER YOU DO WHAT?!

"I start anew"... means WHAT?!

Last chance or you go to the boob bin.

Re: Restart, or reboot problem

presuming you followed
dells recommendation
on ram configuration,

you might try is to remove
the additional ram and
try your system with only
a 512 ram chip .

windows will run just
fine on 512 and you
should see if the boot
up issue resolves.

if not, then i would test
the other 512.

------------
it is not uncommon that
ram goes bad.

also mix and matching different
ram modules is not always
successful on some mobo's.

Re: Restart, or reboot problem

Thank you DB
I've followed dells recomendation , earlier this
week i took all the ram out trying one leg at a time
looking for a bad one but never found one. I'll give it another shot
tomorrow probably and see how it goes hoping
i can resolve it, its not a bad unit otherwise just this niggly piggly
restart, when you have to.
will let you know how i fair.
