| Winfax 10 will not re-install with SP3 loaded I finally got SP3 to work and it seems fine but the tech I was chatting with had me take out Winfax 10.02u before installing SP3. No matter what I do I cannot get it to install and run properly now, even after cleaning the registry and the win.ini files and running the program from Symantec that cleans out all left overs from the Winfax removal. There is no mention of it on the Symantec site either. I saw no reference to this problem on the Microsoft TechNet. Has anyone encountered this problem? It was fine before the install of SP3 Thank you Joe |

| Re: Winfax 10 will not re-install with SP3 loaded Good luck with that. A lot of people didn't like Winfax at all (not me - I like it fine, and it works great), and it was dropped a couple years ago. Might as well take the opportunity to switch to a supported product. If you find a good one, post info about it. You might get some help here: http://www.getfaxing.com/cgi-bin/ib3...gi?act=SF;f=17 "Joe" <noone@home.cc> wrote in message news:4d8s24prpmtcjsv2en0dk4pnsbrmaulqvm@4ax.com... >I finally got SP3 to work and it seems fine but the tech I was > chatting with had me take out Winfax 10.02u before installing SP3. > No matter what I do I cannot get it to install and run properly now, > even after cleaning the registry and the win.ini files and running the > program from Symantec that cleans out all left overs from the Winfax > removal. | Re: Winfax 10 will not re-install with SP3 loaded Paul, WinFax never gave me a bit of trouble all the years I used it it was rock solid. How the SP3 install changed the way it works, or more correctly DOESNT' WORK NOW, I can't say. If I would have known that taking out WinFax for SP3 would have messed it up;I'd have kept WinFax in a heartbeat! I'll sniff around for a replacement or workaround.I can't believe you and I are the only ones that have the program and still want to use it, with or without that darned SP3. | Re: Winfax 10 will not re-install with SP3 loaded You might want to try Windows XP's own fax program. It's not as sophisticated as Winfax Pro 10, but it does the job for my limited usage. I also run Office XP and it will utilize Outlook's contacts. Basically you can send a quick cover page w/o attachments. If attachments are required, you first send them to the fax printer which then launches the fax wizard to complete the cover page. There is a simple Fax Console which contains the Incoming, Inbox, Outbox, and Sent Items folders. When set for Manual Answer, a prompt appears with a soft ring tone for all incoming calls. How to enable and configure the Fax service in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306550 "Joe" <noone@home.cc> wrote in message news:4d8s24prpmtcjsv2en0dk4pnsbrmaulqvm@4ax.com... Not sure how to recommend re-installing. How is the installation failing? |

| RE: Winfax 10 will not re-install with SP3 loaded I upgraded to SP3 with WinFax Pro 10.03 intact. No problem after SP3 installed. But I have not try uninstall WinFax & reinstalling it in SP3. | Re: Winfax 10 will not re-install with SP3 loaded Joe Some interesting responses. WinFax Pro is a tool I value for my business activities. I send and receive a fair number of faxes daily. Symantec no longer support what was a market leader when they acquired the software provider. I played with Vista a year ago and found that WinFax Pro could not be run in Vista. In creating a dual boot of Windows XP and Vista I found WinFax Pro stopped working in Windows XP. After failing to restore the WinFax Pro service I tried Microsoft Fax. It worked, but what it is capable of achieving is far less than WinFax Pro. If you want to send the odd fax it might suffice but it cannot provide an adequate service when you send and receive significant numbers of faxes. I also looked for alternatives but a good replacement was not obvious. This caused me to try again to get WinFax Pro to work and fortunately I was successful. One thought and it is only a thought. Was the failure to install SP3 a result of WinFax Pro being installed or was it your 56k modem. I have not yet tried to install SP3 so what is being said in this conversation is of immediate interest to me. Your Event Viewer logs probably still record the failed installation of SP3. You might post copies here to see what clues they offer. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. You may also still have the log of the failed update. These are very long logs and not easy to interpret. However, you might glean something there. -- Hope this helps. No >problems before SP3 or after SP3. > >Not sure how to recommend re-installing. How is the installation failing? Again I was advised by an MS tech I was chatting with online to remove Winfax because he saw the Live Updates under the Add Remove Programs. you can't remove them without taking out WinFax first, so I blame the trouble on him entirely. I'm sure that SP3 and WinFax would still be working if I had ignored his 'advice'. Once everything is cleaned out and I mean cleaned OUT, Winfax installs like it should and all seems to be OK. The first thing you are asked to do is put in your CSID and your own phone #. This is where it goes wrong. The box where you type this information closes as soon as you touch it with the cursor, you might get to type the CSID in but you can't put your own information phone number in the box, it snaps shut and that's that. I can access other parameters in the setup menu but can't change them, each time I try the window closes. I saw one or tow occasions where I THOUGHT it had installed, but yet I had no icons on the desktop, the folders where WinFax resides were full of files but the program wouldn't run by clicking on them. Weird eh? I spent 4 hours or more yesterday with trying to install WinFax and keep SP3; I even rolled the system back 4 days to when I had SP2 but to no avail Winfax still wouldn't work. Whatever changes SP3 made botches up the install of WinFax no matter what day I choose in system restore. Symantec has a small program on their web page that removes whatever files are left over from a Winfax un-install. I even cleaned the registry myself AFTER I had run this program and followed the instructions for a manual un-install, again no joy. I really appreciate all the helpful replies, it's nice to know that others feel the same about the tried and true WinFax as I do. It also shows what a mistake it was for Symantec to drop it when they had a winner. Maybe these details will help someone diagnose the problem? I'm getting ready to eat breakfast now so I can't look at the event logs as was suggested but I intend to do so when time permits and it's all fresh in our minds :) Thanks again, Joe |

They say the patch is for IE 7 not SP3 but I had WinFax on the machine when I put in IE 7 not the other way around. I will try the free patch and see what it does, they admit is is a limited one compared to what you get when you are a paying member. But it might be well worth it if it solves the problem that I spent so much time on. It may well be that the cause is IE 7 and not SP3 IE7 has been on my machine a long time and I never had a problem with WinFax. But I never tried to re install it either. Thanks I'll try it and let you all know! Joe |

Weird eh? This is only a guess, but this *MIGHT* be caused by an incompatible version of .NET framework IF the installer was wrtitten in .NET. Not sure where to go here from this, only reason it came to mind was similar bad behavior of older ATI CATALYST driver install software due to its use of .NET and version conflicts... > > I spent 4 hours or more yesterday with trying to install WinFax and > keep SP3; I even rolled the system back 4 days to when I had SP2 but > to no avail Winfax still wouldn't work. | Re: Winfax 10 will not re-install with SP3 loaded Joe The bit I have not snipped rings bells here. The problem is I cannot recall all the details how I resolved the problem and I was a little uncertain at the time how I did. This is what I wrote at the time to a colleague. " My suspicion is that changing the Infrared Device in Device Manager from Com1 to Com2 was the start of the road to success. This enabled me to delete all Modems, reboot and Plug and Play detected new hardware and it installed and worked. It has installed on Com1 as it did before but it must have been conflicting with the Infrared Device." -- Hope this helps. Thanks Gerry, I appreciate your response to my woes with Win Fax, if you go to this page: http://www.getfaxing.com/cgi-bin/ib3...=ST;f=17;t=412 You will see that it addesses the exact trouble I am having. They offer two files to fix the problem. One is free the other you have to spend $20 to get for a 1 year membership. After the time and aggravation I spent it's well worht $20 if the the file fixes the thing! It's a shame that we use systems that are so patched propped up to make them run isn't it? It's like building a skyscraper on the foundation of a bungalow! If something goes wrong we can't possilby remember what we did to solve each individual problem, it may have been months or years that we made the fix or installed the patch. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++ I hope you got to see the Lancaster Bomber fly over in commemeration of the Dam Busters 617 Squadron raid on the dams in the Ruhr Valley. I had a dear friend who was in the RAF and flew in Wellington Bombers, the famous Wellington Wimpy. Sadly he's gone now but" still on patrol." He loved those Wimpys they always got him home, I miss him to this day.......... I am an amateur radio operator and Dan was my 13th contact ever using Morse Code back in the '80's. We chatted almost every day for over 12 years and I got to know him better than my own father, he was a true gentleman and a friend. Take care many thanks, Best Regards from the USA! Joe |
