Slipstreaming SP3

From what I have read, it is not possible to slipstream Service Pack 3 with Windows XP 'Gold'...i.e., the original version of Windows XP.

Since Service Pack 2 *can* be slipstreamed with Windows XP Gold, is it possible to slipstream SP3 with a slipstreamed version of XP SP2? Or is that a ridiculous idea?

Thanks for your advice.

Re: Slipstreaming SP3

That is exactly how to do it. It means two slipstreaming processes to reach
an integrated XP SP3 cd. That's OK.

The problem is not that you can't slipstream XP Gold and SP3 directly. The
slipstreaming process works. It's the result that is the problem. Using
such a slipstreamed cd to install XP may produce an unreliable operating
system.

It's not ridiculous. You can do it.

Any sources about this issue?
This looks quite strange to me, aren't service packs cumulative?

"Windows XP Service Pack 3 is a service pack that is cumulative back to the
last currently-supported service pack. This means that Windows XP Service
Pack 3 contains all the fixes that were included with Windows XP Service
Pack 2 (SP2). If you have already installed Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3),
you do not have to install Windows XP SP2.

Note You must have either Windows XP Service Pack 1a or Windows XP Service
Pack 2 installed in order to install Windows XP Service Pack 3."

I wonder why does Microsoft have an exception in this para:

"You can run the SP3 update package on any edition of Windows XP SP1 or SP2. For
example, you can run the SP3 update package on a computer running the Windows XP
Media Center Edition with SP1. The exceptions are Embedded editions for XP."
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=68C48DAD-BC34-40BE-8D85-6BB4F56F5110&displaylang=en#filelist>

The last sentence seems to suggest that Windows XP Gold can be slipstreamed with
SP3. I shall try this tonight and install it in virtual PC to see if the
properties page does show something like this:

Re: Slipstreaming SP3 - time info

I just started PC to do slipstream .... closed all extra processes,
network/firewall/virus/etc
Turned off power control - figuring I'll let it run as long as it needs
while I go out ( Sox are playing !)
Created a XPwSP3 folder
started autostreamer
pointed to xpsp2 CD folder (on hdd) for XP source
Pointed to XPSP3 folder for SP3 source
Pointed to XPwSP3 folder for output file location.
Clicked start and extracting SP3 took one minute.
Then prompted me to create ISO ( I had checked that)
I clicked FINISH and two minutes later it had made the XPSP3 iso file !!

WOW ! I thought it would be a long process.
XPwSP3 size = 677162kb
Total time = 5 minutes.

Reading skills personified.

Windows® XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes _all previously released updates_ for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers' experience with the operating system. This white paper summarizes what is new in Windows XP SP3.
