Replacing disk with a larger one

I am trying to replace the 40GB disk in my daughter's PC (which runs
WinXP Pro SP2) with a 120GB one that I have spare. The plan was to copy
the image across using a program I have called Powerquest Drive Image
Pro 4.0. The problem is that Drive Image Pro tells me that it can't
handle NTFS5 partitions. This has confused me, because I've previously
used the same program to do a similar thing on my own Win2000 Pro SP4
machine, and I thought Win2000 also used NTFS5.

Anyhow, I have two questions:

1. Is there a difference in the NTFS file systems used by WinXP SP2 and
Win2000 SP4? Anywhere I can read up about this?

2. Does anyone know of a simple program that will do disk-to-disk
copying that works with XP SP2?

Thanks.

Re: Replacing disk with a larger one

There was a change to NTFS on 2003 server for sure so guess it did go in to
xp as well.

Get hold of a copy of ghost if you want to make an image and use the whole
new drive as 1 partition.

Re: Replacing disk with a larger one

There are slight differences in NTFS,

Get the latest version of "Powerquest Drive Image Pro", that should be able
to do the job

Or:
- latest version of Ghost
- latest version of Acronis
- ... and many others ...

rgds,
Edwin.

Re: Replacing disk with a larger one

Most HD sites have software available for download.
Acronis True Image has a downloadable fully functioning 30 day trial (my
prefered)

Re: Replacing disk with a larger one

Thanks to everyone who gave their advice. Acronis True Image looks like
it should do the job, so I downloaded the trial version to check it
out. All I have to do now is persuade it to install! I'll take that up
with Acronis support.

Re: Replacing disk with a larger one

(Clive previously indicated he was trying to replace a 40 GB HDD in his
daughter's PC (which runs WinXP Pro SP2) with a 120 GB one and having a
problem doing so with an apparently older version of Powerquest's Drive
Image. The Acronis program had been recommended to him).

Clive:
I think you'll find the Acronis program satisfactory to undertake the disk
cloning process. I recently posted step-by-step instructions for using the
program (for both disk cloning & disk imaging) to this newsgroup. You may
want take a look at it. The subject thread was "Re XP home backup utility".

Re: Replacing disk with a larger one

Just a quick follow up. Acronis support were very responsive. Not only
did they reply within a few hours, but they even understood the problem
and gave me a link to an alternative download that solved the issue.
It's rare to find a company that gives this kind of service these days.
Once installed, cloning the disk was a trivial task and completed
successfully. So my thanks to everyone for their assistance.
