XP SP3 availability

I bought XP Home OEM (SP2) recently and would like to reinstall it
(for various reasons). I understand SP3 is now with us. It would
make sense to install SP3 offline right after reinstalling XP+SP2
(rather than installing XP+SP2 then connecting to the net and
downloading 90+ patches).

I am not an MSDN subscriber etc, just a regular OEM XP Home buyer.
I've visited microsoft's website and cannot find a link to download
SP3 (in order to burn it to a CD for offline installation.)

Will SP3 become available as a download to anyone soon?

Thanks, regards, Robert.

Re: XP SP3 availability

Yes. Probably in a day or two. It was scheduled for Windows Updates
distribution on April 29th but that was delayed.

Re: XP SP3 availability

No it hasn't been withdrawn! It has just been decided to "delay releasing
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to the web". However, this doesn't mean one
can't download it from here:

<http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/svpk/2008/04/windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu_c81472f7eeea2eca421e116cd4c03e2300ebfde4.exe>

This package is exactly the same that will be released in a few days time. Web
update will be a smaller download for people who have their system fully patched
up but someone doing a clean install, will require full offline version to get
all patches necessary for secure computing.

Robert

I strongly recommend you wait for the proper download from Microsoft.
Two links have been posted in response to your question which ring alarm
bells and you may not get what you are looking for.

Actually the RTM build is rather widely available. I've already
installed it on two boxes and a laptop with no problems at all. System
Properties > General tab shows "Service Pack 3" on all three. But if
somebody has been keeping up with updates, there's really nothing
there that's so critical waiting a few extra days or even weeks should
matter very much.

Available from whom? The operative word being Whom. You can get it if
you have paid a subscription to Microsoft Technet but otherwise?

Re: XP SP3 availability

It is the link that the download button on the Download Details page leads
to. The DD page is temporarily offline but the link works.

Re: XP SP3 availability

I downloaded SP3 a few days ago. Chose Save and saved it to a folder, burned
it and installed it.

Download & Save Service Pack 3 Here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/ms...2300ebfde4.exe

It is the correct MS product. My message headers reveal the current build
that will be released:

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.5512
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.5512

That said, I don't think anyone in the *faint of heart* area should rush to
download it as it /should/ be available in MU/WU in a few days.

I do recommend taking a few precautions when anyone downloads SP3,
(regardless of from where), such as the following.

From: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/w.../cc164204.aspx

* If the configuration of your antivirus software prevents certain system
files from being changed, SP3 installation might fail. Try temporarily
disabling your antivirus software. You can usually do this by right-clicking
your antivirus program icon (which typically appears in the bottom
right-hand corner of the computer screen) and clicking Disable.

* If you disable your antivirus software before you install the service
pack, be sure that you are aware of the risks involved, and be sure to
enable it after the service pack is installed.

Before you download and install SP3, turn off your anti-virus and any
anti-spyware programs such as Windows Defender. If you use a third party
firewall, disable it and turn on the Windows Firewall in the Control Panel
for the installation. Once SP3 is in and working, you can enable the third
party firewall and turn of the Windows Firewall. Do not keep both running.
