System Recovery died

Tried to run system recovery on a PC with Windows XP that I replaced and want
to donate to a school. Went to quick format to erase all data files and
installed applications. Recovery started but stopped (several times) at
between 16% and 18% completed, always on a Windows\I386\ file, but never the
same one. The screen flickers and the process stalls. Starting over (F-10)
doesn't help, same result. Rebooting normally gets a DOS message "NTLDR is
missing" CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart, which goes back to the same message. Can't
reboot, can't run recovery. This PC will be usless unless this problem can be
resolved. Any ideas????
Thanks,
Dave G.

RE: System Recovery died

Most hds will not run the "Quick format",also,XP fails at 16-18%,to enter
recovery console, one boots to xp cd,press r For recovery @ xp boot menu
screen. From that point, all one needs to do is type:DiskPart In
DiskPart,delete
the partition(s),press ESC key,type:EXIT
