After that, it'll only be available from OEM on ultra low cost laptops (for 2 years and it will be XP Home). - Thee Chicago Wolf |

Yes, if you want a guaranteed license to continue using past that date. Newegg is a decent place to show as they have pretty cheap deals on retail and OEM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...e=Professional - Thee Chicago Wolf |

| Re: Any updates on availability of Windows XP? Uncle!!!! A bit ago, I decided to finally stop procrastinating about building a PC. Instead of buying a full retail version of Windows XP Pro, it seems to make more sense to buy an OEM vertsion that alreasy includes SP2c. Cost is about $130 less, which is better applied to buying the bits of pieces of a PC to build. I ASSuME that the correct MSFT part number is E85-05040. |

I don't agree. In fact I think buying an OEM version is a very poor choice. An OEM copy comes with several restrictions, the most severe of which is that its license ties it permanently to the first computer it's installed on. It can never legally be moved to another computer, sold, or given away (except with the original computer). Instead I recommend a Retail Upgrade copy, which in most cases can be bought for very close to the same price. And contrary to what many people think, an Upgrade copy *can* be used to do a clean installation, as long as you have a copy of a previous qualifying version of Windows to insert as proof of ownership when prompted to do so. Worst case, if you don't have such a CD, you can buy a used copy of Windows 98 very cheaply someplace like eBay. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience Please Reply to the Newsgroup |
