Restoring files, deleted by the system!

Hello all, i really need your help.
I had a problem with my external hard drive (still do). After auto-updating
windows xp i restarted the system and it tried to write some FAT32 system
files on the external HD, but then said there was an error, and when i tried
to get in the drive it said that its not formatted and therefore i cannot get
in. Today i restarted the comp, and it tried to write those system files
again, only before that it said "Checking files and folders". While checking
it said "Folder Pictures_CD is completele unreadable - deleting folder's
entry". After that it got stuck so i rebooted, and now i can get in the
drive, but when i try to get in that same Pictures_CD folder, it gives me the
same "not formatted...." message, and it also says that the folder is
empy!!!!!!! i have VERY important pictures there!! PLEASE, if you know how to
recover those files!!!!! I'm desperate!!!!
Thanks in advance and sorry for the long message,
Dan.

If the files are very important, I strongly suggest that
you STOP USING THAT DRIVE NOW.
Take the drive to a reputable technician and let him try to get them
recovered for you.
Repeating, Do Not Use The Drive Again till the files are recovered.
There is a Very Strong chance they can be recovered unless you have
completely destroyed them.

I second LS's recommendation. Stop using the drive and take it to a
reputable computer repair shop that has experience in data and drive
recovery, not Best Buy or the Geek squad and the likes. There are also
several very good data/drive recovery companies. They can be very costly,
however. Only you know how valuable the data is.

Always have a full and complete backup, on at least two different media, of
important data.
