| Disable CD-ROM I need to disable write capabilities on a CD-ROM drive. This is because the CPU will be located in an insecure area of our building where we don't want unauthorized copies of files to be burned. The drive itself can be diabled, but it needs to be done in such a way as it can't be re-activated without permission. -- KR |

| RE: Disable CD-ROM If you right click on the CDROM under MY COMPUTER and then select the Recording Tab you should have a check box your can uncheck that says, "Enable CD recording on this Drive. I would think if you did this and made the user a USER not and ADMIN you should be good to go and no one can change it back. Good luck Thanks "Kathy" wrote: > I need to disable write capabilities on a CD-ROM drive. | Re: Disable CD-ROM That won't work with some 3rd party CD recording software, Nero for instance. Nero requires that Enable CD recording on this Drive be UNChecked anyway and Nero still allows you to burn CDs. If you only have XP's inbuilt CD Burning, either one of these should work, that way someone cannot change the settings, because they are removed from the CD drive's Properties. | Re: Disable CD-ROM Pull it out and put in a regular CDROM drive. (no burner). Keep in mind there are USB burners available. | RE: Disable CD-ROM First of all, you need to disable write capabilities on a "CD-ROM". There is no inbuilt write capabilities in a CD-ROM. Then why you are worried. Secondly, if you Windows XP Professional then do as described by Wesley Vogel then second step create a new user with "Limited" access or make "Guest" account turn on (more less rights then a Limited User). Make a strong password to your administrator account. Hope this information helps you, let us know! "Kathy" wrote: > I need to disable write capabilities on a CD-ROM drive.
