Two or 3 times in the last week, I have tried to open Windows Explorer and
it just hangs. When I try to close it, all the icons on my desktop
disappear. Eventually they come back but once this happens, I am unable to
fire up Explorer until I reboot. I haven't made any changes to my WinXPSP2
system. Any ideas?

What happens if you kill the explorer.exe process in Task Manager and then
runs it again through File->New Task.

Task Manager won't let me kill it in the applications windows. When I tried
in the process window, the system just hung.
