| Do I need a BIOS Upgrade? Every now and then my computer shutsdown and I get the blue screen. When it restarts and I report the error this the message I get: --------------------------------------------------------- Solution not found: consider BIOS Upgrade Thank you for submitting an error report. Problem description Microsoft is unable to determine what specifically caused the problem you reported. Consider BIOS Upgrade During the crash analysis, we noticed the basic input/output (BIOS) system version on this computer does not match the specifications for the processor that is installed on your computer. This can occur when a newer processor is installed on an older system board or older BIOS. Using a BIOS that does not support the installed processor can result in Windows system crashes. Please contact your computer manufacturer or motherboard manufacturer for an updated version of BIOS for your computer's processor. Important: Upgrading the BIOS version may require moderate to advanced troubleshooting skills. If you are uncomfortable with performing these steps, you might want to consider consulting with paid technical support. If your computer contains an Intel processor, you can use special utilities to identify your specific processor. Please click the following link for more information: Intel Processor Identification Utility List of BIOS Manufacturers For a list of BIOS manufacturer websites, see the following two Knowledge Base articles: See the article 243909 for a list of BIOS manufacturer websites Part 1 (A-Pi) See the article 243971 for a list of BIOS manufacturer websites Part 2 (Pr-Z) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have read that upgrading ones BIOS can destroy the motherboard if done incorrectly. I only get the blue screen sparatically and could live with it. However by doing that am I damaging my computer? |

| Re: Do I need a BIOS Upgrade? Since reinstalling XP on my 3-year old laptop recently I've been getting weekly BSODs (on a good week), and every once in a while I get this message upon reboot. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense--exact same hardware I've had for 3 years, and all of a sudden my BIOS doesn't match my CPU? Riiiiiiiiight. My favorite is that after a reboot I'll also occasionally get a "this problem has been fixed in a newer version of Vista". I'm not entirely certain that whatever is outputting this message realizes that I'm not even running Vista to begin with...or if it's actually suggesting I "upgrade" to Vista. |

| Re: Do I need a BIOS Upgrade? Thats utter piffle, codswallop, crap You need to note the actual error shown on the blue screen Following the reccomendations there is the easiest way to a non functioning system, much the same as using MS driver updates.
