Why Aren't People Standing In Line For Linux?

It seems that people are camping out in front of stores that will be
offering the PS3 despite it's hefty price tag of $600.00 or so.

The same thing has happened when Windows was released.

Could you imagine the riots that would ensue if Microsoft gave away the
first million copies of Vista?

Yet, there sits Linux.
A dusty box on the shelf.
A wasted blank CD burned because it didn't support the users hardware.
Time wasted downloading and installing Linux and then discovering it just
doesn't live up to it's hype.

Linux is free every single day of the year, yet it's desktop usage figures
either measured, or perceived by actually looking around, is so low that
it almost can't be measured.

The usual figure is about 0.3 percent.

So, if Linux is free.
Windows cost money.
Linux is supposed to be better than Windows.

Why is 95+ percent of the desktops on earth running Windows?

The answer is, Linux is not good.
It's obvious that if Linux offered a better experience than Windows,
people would switch rather than live on the Windows upgrade mill.

But Linux does not, and that is why it will remain at less than 1 percent
of desktop usage.

That is of course until Vista arrives and then Linux, as a desktop system,
will be completely crushed forever and remain a niche system for geeks.

Have a nice day!

Re: Why Aren't People Standing In Line For Linux?

Not that I approve of random product bashing, but I would have to agree, I
tried it not too long ago and threw up my hands in frustration after 2 days
of trying to get it to work correctly, definitely not ready for prime time.

Clearly a troll, but what tha hay, I'll respond.

Why did VHS supersede Betamax?
Why are people not driving 500+mpg cars? Or electric cars?
etc.

This list of questions can go on but I just can't think of any
more examples right now.

The point is, of course, that quality of product does not always overcome
quality of marketing, political pressure, and marketplace inertia. There
are dozens of reasons why a product succeeds or languishes in obscurity,
and inherent product quality is rarely the key factor.

But my question to you, troll, is Why do you care? If you like or prefer
to use Windows, go ahead and do it. The Linux community doesn't piss in
your pool, so go away, please.

He (she?) didn't really try any Linux distro. Just an add-on, "me too"

A bit of snipping there, but just to make my point:-

Do something for us.
Come back to us with some figures *after* Vista is released, not of
pre-installed Vista "sales", but of actual sales - people who went out and
actually *bought* it.
Then I'll listen...
