ADWARE PROBLEM

I am pretty sure this is not the right place but I can't find anywhere else....I recently pick up a "bug" that is driving me up the wall. I keep getting popups in internet explorer 6 at any and all times. I get up in the morning and there will be 15-20-25 popups on my screen. I have run all sorts of virus (Norton, Adaware, RegClean etc to) trying to cure the problem to no avail. I am including some screen shots of what I am getting. The key seems to be something called CiD (see circled on the screen shots) buried in my system. I can't find anything that looks like this CiD thing. The IE pop up blocker does no good. Can anyone help me out or head me in the right direction. I am using WinXP Home on an HP computer. Thanks.

You didn't look.

In the Microsoft Hierarchy there is...
microsoft.public.security.virus

As well as there are anti virus and ant syware groups in the alt.* hierarchy.

Download the above program Spybot Search & Destroy.
Install it, update it, and scan with it.
If it does not remove everyhing, but finds it; redo the scan in Safe Mode.

That program just got a HUGE TWO THUMBS DOWN from either PC Magazine,
or from PC World.

It hasn't been updated in a year or more. It doesn't do what it says
it can do.

Actually, version 1.5.2.20 was released January 30, 2008.

PC Magazine is no longer any good. This is coming from someone, me, who had an article
published in PC Mag in 1988.

In any case it is plain wrong!

Signatures are readily available and SpyBot S&D is now at v1.5.x
I'm using v1.5.1.19 but my understanding there are later revisions.

In addition SpyBot S&D is effective on what its signatures and rules detect.

Oh, so you now admit you were wrong to say there had been no updates for a

The article state there were no immunization update since July '07.

The immunization concept is VERY different from their rules and signatures.

The article mentions; " Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 5.5 scored 9.5"
That's comparing apples and oranges because SpyBot S&D does NOT target viruses and Trojans
the same way as as the above. It targets non-viral malware in the class of adware and
syware with some overlap of viruses and trojans.

The article only proves that you need multiple anti malware utilities.

Re: ADWARE PROBLEM

I've been somewhat disappointed in both AdAware and SpyBot's
latest versions. Both seem to have numerous problems with random
freezing and shaky update processes. AdAware also fell victim to
the "Feature Creep/Settings Bloat Disease" with the addition of the
background service in the new version. I've been testing each new
release of both programs waiting for things to get resolved, but feel
that neither program works or performs as well as their earlier versions.

Re: ADWARE PROBLEM

I am not a fan of SpyBot anymore. I still have it on my system for browser
protection, but I no longer do scans with it because of the false positives
it is prone to. I am thankful for system restore.

I discontinued Adaware when their new version came out, for the same reason
as you.

There are few that like Ad-aware 2007. I for one don't like it becuase it has a dependency
on a NT Service.

Your problem with SpyBot S&D may be due to not having the most current revision.
