I can't get my XP Pro system to manually install windows updates. It will
work if I let it download/install updates automatically but trying to do so
maunally produces an error. I've searched and see some older posts applying
to this but none of the fixes work. This system was unused for over a year
and now that it's active again I'm having this problem (for the first time).
Any ideas? My windows is legitimate as is office and all other software. I
don't know what could be causing this.

Why don't you try in the WU newsgroup at microsoft.public.windowsupdate?
The real experts on update issues are there.
