| i have 2 gigs of ram installed but applications wont launch once 1 gig is used up. i have 2 gigs of ram installed but applications wont launch once 1 gig is used up. The performance monitor never shows more then 1 gig of memroy used up, yet applications wont launch when its near the 1 gig of used memory. how to free up that other gig so that I can use 2 gigs of ram instead of 1. Its like i have 2 gigs of ram and 1 gig is wasted. also, why dont applications launch? do i need to configure some swap space or something to ensure applications launch? |

| Re: i have 2 gigs of ram installed but applications wont launch once 1 gig is used up. Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak? You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures for the 6 processes using the largest amounts? -- Hope this helps. | Re: i have 2 gigs of ram installed but applications wont launch once 1 gig is used up. There is a Boot.Ini option or qualifier that can limit the RAM the system can use /Maxmem:_ I doubt this is your problem but worth checking. I would also double-check your BIOS setup for RAM configuration. | Re: i have 2 gigs of ram installed but applications wont launch once 1 gig is used up. Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it is more informative. Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter. Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the System log in Event Viewer for the last boot. No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in a previous boot. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. -- Hope this helps. | Re: i have 2 gigs of ram installed but applications wont launch once 1 gig is used up. What does defragmenting the disk and all that disk cleanup stuff have to do with a memory problem? Unless the disk is almost full, it should make almost no difference to free disk space, and the only effect of defragmenting would perhaps be a slight change in disk access speed. Original poster: when an application "won't launch", what do you actually see? Do you get an error message, or does simply nothing happen? From your Commit Charge numbers you posted, it appears that you have about a 3.5GB pagefile. Try dropping this to about half that size or less (so the Commit Charge Limit number goes below 4G) and see what happens (I don't expect this to fix the problem, just to possibly gather more info). | Re: i have 2 gigs of ram installed but applications wont launch once 1 gig is used up. Oh - if the disk IS almost full (<1GB or so free), do free some space. Do you have onboard video, or is it a separate card? If it is onboard, that is where at least some of the memory is gone to. In any case, you will never get to use all of the physical memory, as some (possibly 1/2) is allocated for use by the system (but not necessarily actually in use) and is not available to applications. This should not limit you to only 1GB in your case, as your applications should also be able to make use of virtual memory (pagefile). Which brings up another question: in Task Manager, what amount does the bottom bar graph say for PF usage when your problem occurs? And sorry for topposting - but I didn't start it. he <who@dat.dere> wrote in news:Xns9A42CF91651571h6y23@207.46.248.16: > What does defragmenting the disk and all that disk cleanup stuff have > to do with a memory problem? If there really is something wrong with the disk, defragmenting can likely only make it worse. Even if everything is working properly, defragmenting rarely does much good. Defragmentation does not create more free disk space, it just rearranges where it is. I do agree with the logic of getting someone to do something that likely won't fix a problem but that may generate a report that may be useful, or maybe even make things worse to point out the problem. |

| Re: i have 2 gigs of ram installed but applications wont launch once 1 gig is used up. If you are referring to what I think you are I snipped the part of the reply not meant for me to make clear what I was replying to. Bottom posting to one who top posts is just as annoying / irritating as top posting is to those who prefer to bottom post. Given that Outlook Express is used by the majority then anyone who uses one of your "most news readers" is part of a minority. This debate is not one worth having as both sides adopt implacable positions and it is OT in this newsgroup. -- Hope this helps.
