Before anyone whose clock is running slow rushes out to buy a new
battery, he should first take note of whether he is losing time while
the computer is running or while it's powered off. If it's while
powered off, the problem *is* very likely the battery. But if it's
while running, it can *not* be the battery, because the battery isn't
used while the computer is running.

Re: keeping time

To Ken and Colin: I don't think I have a battery I'm using a desktop
computer and is never shut off, I have looked in a file that says error log
in that file it states several times somthing about sycronized time error. I
just tried to find that file again but don't rember where I saw it.

The battery they mean is the coin sized cmos battery on the mother board.

When you open up Date and Time Properties and click on the Internet Time
tab, you should see something that looks like this:

http://www.petri.co.il/images/time.jpg

If you see time.windows.com in the window, simply change it to:

tock.usno.navy.mil

.... then Update Now and OK.

Yes, you do. All desktop computers have a battery. It's about the size
and shape of a US quarter, and sits on the motherboard. It's used to
keep the CMOS settings (including the clock) intact when the computer
is powered off.

Then as I suspected, the battery is not your problem. The battery is
only used when the computer is powered off.

Windows synchronizes the system clock with an internet-based atomic
clock periodically. Apparently that process is failing and that's why
your clock is off. Try changing the clock to which it synchronizes to
tock.usno.navy.mil

Re: keeping time

I would like to know whether or not my motherboard battery is recharged
whilst my computer is running from the mains.

I have a Compaq Deskpro EN Series SFF.

Cheers,

Charly.

No, those batteries are not rechargeable. The load on them is
minuscule, so they last a very long time.

No, it is not.

It was perhaps fifteen years ago that I had a computer in which I had
installed a motherboard battery/charger combo, sold as something that
would last forever. It lasted about five years, about the same as the
life you often get from a regular $2-3 battery you find on
motherboards today. I can't remember how much it cost, but it was not
a good value.

Personally I change computers about every four years. When I replace
one, my wife (who has much lower computing requirements than I do)
gets my old one. That means that between the two of us, a computer
lasts about 8 years here. I can't remember the last time I needed to
change a battery.
