Re: Why Linux Will NEVER go Mainstream On The Desktop. (Wonder how Roy could have missed this one?)

I've used both Windows and Linux for many years. I found that Linux
will run for months without a reboot, and it is faster than Windows.
Windows has a lot more security concerns and sloppy applications that
will corrupt the registry. I prefer Linux for serious work, Windows
for games. Best of all you can have both O/S on the same drive.

You bet that Microsoft considers Linux a threat. You can buy a bare
bones machine for $300--load Linux on it for free or shell out another
$200 Vista for every machine. Vista overpriced?

Tell us more ...

I got 4 PC's plus a laptop at home, networked, works well, and I don't see
any reason to upgrade to Vista. I oldest machine goes back to 2003, my Office
2000 all paid for.

As and when I replace these, and if Vista is sold with the machine at a
reasonable price, I see no big problem.

Curious, not a Linux user, but do I have to get Linux versions of Word
Processors, spreadsheets, email software etc?? Other migration issues??

Take a look at the screenshots on this page:

http://www.ubuntu.com/

I just took a gander at the Live CD and it's awesome, really awesome.

Check out the email program:

http://www.ubuntu.com/include/img/evolution.png

Look familiar?

Heh.

Alias, who is going to install Ubuntu on at test machine and, if it
works OK, will install on all my machines and Hasta La Vista, Microsoft!

Ubuntu Linux comes with Open Office so you don't have to buy any of that
software.

Except that the default install doesn't support WPA, still installs the
very less secure WEP, and it doesn't support as many devices as Windows
XP does.

Ubuntu supports more devices than Vista does, has more 64-bit drivers and
applications than 64-bit XP and/or Vista do, and you can get WPA support
by installing gnome-network-manager. I've even gotten WPA to work with the
LiveCD by installing the packages from a USB memory stick.
