-- i have been trying for months to run sfc /scannow on my pc.
well i have made myself a slipstreamed xpsp2 (using autostream)and copied
the I386 folder from cd to c:\WINDOWS\
ServicePackFiles folder. no matter what i set windows sourcepath ,
windowsNTSourcepath , ServicePackSourcePath ,
or ServicePackCachePath to it still asks for the cd (cd-rom drive is working).
i have tried e:\ (cd-rom drive) on everything and c:\ (HDD) still no luck.
in my c:\WINDOWS\inf folder i got a " FP40 ext.inf file" that when i open
its got "WK_CD_NAME=" Windows xp Professional cd_rom" and SP_CD_NAME =
"WINDOWS XP professional servicepack 2 cd" if i changed professional to home
(which is what i got) would that help me to run my sfc /scannow?
would it hurt anything?

the setup cd. select new install,
point to the o.s. on the hd, and
say yes to repair.

try you winpro first if the
slipstream actually works.

if not, then try you home edition,
if it actually will let you since winxp
home may not be backwards compatiable.

if nothing works, then you will
need to borrow someones winxp
pro and do the repair.

after the pc is up and running,
use something that will replace the
cd key with the one for your pc.

well it does seem you are in
a pickle.

it is unclear why you are determine
to run a system file checker when
you don't have a method to access
the original system files if the
file checker found a corrupt
file.

i would releive myself of this predictament
and erase this from your mind.

i would highly recommend you create a
disk image. without a genuine copy of
windows you will be out of luck when
the o.s. crashes and currently you only have
winxp home version.

i would suggest a couple of things that
i think would really help you.

firstly, create a setup cd and
combine your winxp sp1 with
a download of sp2 using the
slipstream method you are famaliar with.

this additional cd that now has sp2 will
come in very handy for you.

as far as the professional version, i wouldn't
bother with it if you don't have a genuine version.
microsoft has made some serious modifications and
you will find your self in a corner when your winxp
pro o.s. crashes.

secondly, make a third cd for a winxp PE.
go to site for a "barts pe" and get the info
you need to create a preinstallation disk
that can include your winxp setup files. The
pe has additional tools not included with
windows. In addition manually add
the plugin/tools for DriveImage XML and
a copy of the drive image xml program onto
the disk as well.

thirdly create a disk image of what you
have now with driveimage xml.

if you happen to crash in the future you
now have several tools
1) a winxp home setup cd with sp2
2) a winxp PE
3) disk images (backup) of your hd.
4) create emergency bootup disks and
add fixboot and fixmbr commands onto it.

again, if you don't have a genuine
winxp pro setup cd, begin to wean
yourself off of what you have and back
onto you winxp home....

also, it would be better to use a
a dvd disk because regular cd's
can't hold as much. but if you
dont have a dvd drive on the pc now
i wouldn't install one because it the o.s.
crashes you wil be swimming in vinegar..

try the recommendations off another
pc to be safe.

that i downloaded from MS. a MVP on this site and others told me that i had
to in order to run my sfc /scannow.
can i do a fresh install using my origanal XP home cd?

it sounds like you are had
this issue before and basically
what i suggested to you had
been done so by the MVP.

ideally, you would need to do
a clean install from that slipstreamed cd
because it will install sp2 which is
"vital". Surely any future runs
of sfc would rely upon this installation.

however, i would not wipe the slate
clean with a clean install. why
not try a windows repair with that
slipstreamed cd.

boot with it, select new install/upgrade
then point to the o.s., then say yes
to repair it. if the slipstream
cd doesn't work, then something
went wrong when you created it.
It might be possible to transfer
those setup files on to a PE and
work with a PE disk instead.

if you this doesn't accomplish what
you want, then the alternatives
are to leave everything as is and never
worry about sfc or
do a clean install and loose everything.

i think you have received enough
information for you to make a decision
that is best for you and your pc.

if there is a trick or technique with
this type of sfc issue, i am not aware
of any. SFC is a critical process that
push windows o.s. into a method of
protecting those files that are desired
to be controlled by malwares, virus, etc...

and in order to achieve an assurance that
your the system files you are checking are
100% genuine, they rely upon there original
source disk. thus the issue you have now is
that you mixed n matched system files from
two different o.s.'s.... And what you need to
do if you want for sfc to work is to get the pc
back with a genuine version of an o.s.
