How does one delete files from backup utility? I have backup set to do incremental backups regularly but today backup utility decided to do another complete backup, almost filling my backup hard drive. Can anyone help me delete today's files from backup utility?

Can anyone help me delete today's files from backup utility? Open Explorer, navigate to the backup hard drive and remove the file dated today. Then run the incremental backup. -- Terry R. ***Reply Note*** Anti-spam measures are included in my email address. Delete NOSPAM from the email address after clicking Reply. |

Re: How does one delete files from backup utility? Somehow, explorer does not allow me to open the backup file. I can only access it via Backup Utility and then the only option I get is to restore the file. Open the backup file? I suggested to delete the backup file from the backup drive, then create the correct backup that you wanted. You can't remove files from within a backup file if that's what you're trying to do. You can restore them, but not selectively remove just to reduce the file size. -- Terry R. ***Reply Note*** Anti-spam measures are included in my email address. If you would like to have more robust restore options, you will have to PAY FOR a third party product.

RE: How does one delete files from backup utility? I have a related problem. I append each backup file to the prior backup file. But from time to time, I want to delete the older backup files whilst retaining the more recent ones. But I can't find a way to do this. I've been deleting the entire group of backup files. Then, when the scheduled job runs again, XP will create a new backup file. But this requires deleting the more recent backup files in order to delete the older backup files. Is there a way around this? You can't delete any of the older backups in a string of backups or you'll mess it all up. >I've been deleting the entire group of backup files. >Then, when the scheduled job runs again, XP will create a new >backup file. Yep. >But this requires deleting the more recent backup files in >order to delete the older backup files. Is there a way around this? Nope.

Re: How does one delete files from backup utility? Not being a fan of native Windows backup, I'd try a 3rd party backup utility. A number of people swear by Acronis True Image, but I've never tried it myself. I was using NovaStor with a tape drive I had, but my SCSI card went out, so I don't use that any more. The version I had didn't write to external (or internal) HDD's too easily. I use Drive Image XML, a freebie cloning system, to do backups to an external fire wire drive. That one doesn't do incremental or differential backups, but Acronis does, and has scheduling capabilities, also. More on it here: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing...cts/trueimage/ SC Tom "Robert Lee" <RobertLee@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:C28B6EDE-71D0-48EF-969E-EED0FBB36E5E@microsoft.com... >I have a related problem. I use it and it's great... but one cannot delete older files in a string of backup files in that without messing things up either.
