Sure, why not? They are just pictures. If you're worried about it, move
the files to a temporary holding location for a few days. If all is
well, then permanently delete them.

I don't like some of the bitmaps I like the new vista wallpaper.

You can safely remove those images and copy whatever you like into
that directory.
