| Limited number of windows applications Hi, I'm running Windows XP and it seems that once I reach some limit I can no longer open more windows applications. For example, I can only open so many internet explorer instances. What gives? Is there a way to increase this limit? Cheers, D |

On another WinXP machine I have (with 512MB of ram) I can run many more instances of applications. Any other thoughs? Is there a configuration somewhere? Thanks, D |

Do not disable the virtual memory (swap file), no matter how much RAM installed. > For example, I can only open so many internet explorer instances. > What gives? Let Windows manage the virtual memory and do not set any maximum. > Is there a way to increase this limit? In the remote case that you didn't fiddle around with the virtual memory, this article may or may not apply: "Out of Memory" error message appears when you have a large number of programs running http://support.microsoft.com/kb/126962/en-us Note that the correct syntax under WinXP reads "SharedSection=xxxx, yyyy, zzz" The MSKB content manager has been advised to correct that article. -- d-d |

I do not get any message about being low on virtual memory or "out of memory". How do you enable virtual memory? Cheers, D |

You may want to double-check the present settings: Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Performance > Settings > Advanced tab (translated on-the-fly). Make also sure that the drive with the swap file has enough free capacity - otherwise, it's no problem to split or move that file to a different partition. -- d-d |

It's not a function of how much RAM is installed I'm pretty sure, but I can't seem to get any closer than that. Count the windows and see what the number of windows limit is; IIRC it's something like 30, which is an awful lot and likely why it doesn't come up often. IF you have any 3rd party appls like tweakui, system optimizer, things like that, you might find the source of the issue there. At any rate, with the number of windows limit, and google, the solution can probably be relocated. And *this* time I'm going to commit it to a file<g>! I'll try some googles too if you can come up with a finite, repeatable number. Twayne |

That's not the answer I'm trying to recall, but it is one place that could bottle-neck. Each window requires a finite amount of video RAM, usually in the order of 10 to 15k IIRC, which I may not. So if your video card uses on-board RAM as a lot of them do ... . Might be worth looking at your video ram, or if you don't know how to to that, fililng it with something large and then seeing how many IE windows you can open and whether it's fewer windows. The OS of course, *will* have a finite limit too, for resource protection, but it's pretty huge, something in the order of 200, I think it was. Tawyne >> >> Yeah, install more memory.
