| Installing XP Pro on a tablet PC Is it possible to install Windows XP Pro on a tablet PC and then just add the needs driver to make the tablet pc functionality working? Actually, we only have Windows XP pro in the field and we don't want Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. Do I need absolutely to install the tablet pc edition? -- _________________________________________ François Racine ICQ#: 36826607 More ways to contact me: http://wwp.icq.com/36826607 _________________________________________ |

I doubt it, but what would be the point of removing the TabletPC OS, and then reinstalling its Tablet capabilities? Sounds like an exercise in futility, to me. Remember, WinXP Tablet PC Edition is a _superset_ (iow, it does _everything_ WinXP Pro can do, plus contains additional hand-writing and reading features. It is available only as a factory-installed OS on specifically designed portable computers with specialized hardware components. Then I'd have you ask why you bought a TabletPC to start with. Its specialized hardware components certainly would have made it cost more than a regular laptop with WinXP Pro. Why not return it and purchase the sort of computer that actually meets your needs? > Do I need absolutely to install the tablet pc edition? > No, if you don't want to use Tablet PC, you can format the hard drive and install WinXP Pro. The choice is yours, as it's your computer. However, there could be a couple possible adverse repercussions of which you should be aware. First and foremost, removing an OEM-installed operating system and replacing it with another will almost invariably void any and all support agreements and, sometimes, even the warranty. You would, at the very least, have to re-install Tablet PC before getting any support from the manufacturer. Again, consult the computer's manufacturer for specifics. Secondly, there may be the additional cost involved in purchasing a WinXP license for this new computer. (An OEM CD and license from some previous computer will not do, for legal and usually technical reasons.) After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS installation, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.) | Re: Installing XP Pro on a tablet PC The point is: When we are reinstalling OS with SMS, the risk seeing technicians launching a Windows XP Pro installation on a Tablet PC is high. Most of the time, they will not even see physically the computer. So as we have 4 tablet pcs on over 200 laptops there will be a mistake. If it would be possible to install an XP Pro over a tablet PC then we can script something to install what the tablet PC need to work as a tablet PC but with XP Pro.
