Hi all. I'm having a problem with a dial-up connection I'm trying to
establish. I'll try to put all the info in this post.

Ok. I have dsl service on my home phone that I use with my pc. I also have
a laptop that I am trying to get dial-up working on for when I'm out of the
house. I ordered the dial-up through my phone company (verizon). They sent
a disk that sets up your account then installs some sort of software. Right
after setting up the account (yes, the dial-up works during the set-up where
it dials out to talk to the verizon servers), I get one of those error
messages "This program has encountered a problem and needs to shut down."
with a button to notify or not notify microsoft. This error message comes
just as the cd is about to install the program.

After several tries and getting the same error message, I created a dial-up
connection myself. Put in the account name and password and the phone number
provided by verizon. The modem dials out, makes the connection, verifies
account name and password and makes the connection at 52k. Ok, that works
fine, but here's the problem. When I open ie I get "The page cannot be
displayed.” Doesn’t matter which website I try.

I think that if I can get that software to install my connection will work.
Although, it should already work with the dial-up connection I set-up myself.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Click Start, Run, type:

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter key

Restart the system

Comment:
If you don't need any services provided by Verizon ISP, other than the
internet connection, don't install the software you mentioned. Simlar with
cable connection, if you know how to connect without such software.

What does that command do?

Also forgot to mention that laptop connects to internet with no problems
when connecting via dsl. Problem only occurs when connecting with dial-up.

That's the problem Dave. I created a dial-up connection without software.
The laptop dials out and connects but IE doesn't work. I get "Page cannot be
displayed" message. So I thought maybe if software gets installed then IE
will work.

Winsock is related to TCP settings. It provides the support for
applications that use TCP/IP to share a connection. The command reloads
the default settings.

Then the Winsock repair probably won't help. I just thought that if the
attempted install damaged those settings, a repair might help.

Dave. What are you talking about? Tell me what I misperceived. There was NO
software installed and that's why I created the dial-up connection using
Windows.

Hey Bear. Automatically detect settings is already unchecked in LAN
settings. And I tried the Dial whenever a network connection is not present.
Still doesn't work.

What confuses me most about this problem is that IE has no problems when I
connected with dsl service.

About 3 years ago I created a dial-up connection that worked fine on this
laptop. Dsl and dial-up worked just fine from my home on the laptop.
