Flash drives and the "safely remove hardware" option

I used to get the icon in the taskbar every time i plugged my flash drive in,
but not anymore. I have heard that not "safely removing" it can har it or the
data on it... Is this true? If so how can i get the option to start popping
up again?

Re: Flash drives and the "safely remove hardware" option

Hello Keith,

It might be possible that the 'safely remove' icon be hidden in the
notification area due to a period of inactivity. Do you see a '<' button on
the notification area ? If yes, click on it to show the hidden notification
icons. Check if the safely remove device icon shows up there.

Re: Flash drives and the "safely remove hardware" option

Make a shortcut in quick launch that points to "RunDll32.exe
shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll" (Without quotes)

Try making the shortcut again. Maybe it was just because that was broken in
two lines :
RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

A space between rundll and shell32.dll

Re: Flash drives and the "safely remove hardware" option

Insert the flash drive.
My Computer, right click on the drive, Properties, Hardware, highlight the
drive, Properties, Policies, select no caching.
Now when you close the program that is accessing the drive, you can remove
the drive without using Remove Hardware.
When you use Remove Hardware, you have to reboot or use the commands from
Ayush to get the drive recognized again.

Re: Flash drives and the "safely remove hardware" option

Well that helps prevent me from damaging my drive, but i bought this
particular one for its speed... Doing that contradicts what i was aiming
for... So there is no solution that anyone knows of?
