2 HUGE .TMP files - To Delete or NOT Delete...that is the question

I have 2 HUGE .tmp files on my pc and need to create some badly needed disc
space SOON.

The files are:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\hp2.tmp (7.6 GB)
and
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\hp2F.tmp (15.58 GB)

Can I delete these files or, at least, move them to my external hard drive
without it causing me major headaches?

Also, not sure if this has any bearing, but could the "hp" part of the the
file names have anything to do with the HP all-in-one
printer/copier/fax/scanner that I have connected to my machine?

Any help/advice/guidance would be GREATLY appreciated....thnx. Mark

The Temp directory is supposed to be used for temporary files. If an
application writes a file there, it's supposed to delete it before it
terminates. Sometimes an installation routine will put something in
Temp, then ask you to reboot. During the reboot, the file will be used
then deleted.

But things don't always go according to plan. Apps crash before they
can delete the file they created, sometimes the programmer just goofed
and didn't think to delete the temp file. So sometimes it's a good
idea to clean up this file.

Start by rebooting, to take care of the possibility that one or more
of those files was intentionally left by an installation routine.
After that, you should be able to select them all and delete them.
Windows will not let you delete any that are current in use.

If you have doubts about whether a file may really be needed, rename
it and run that way for a couple of days or weeks or whatever time
period makes you comfortable. If nothing bad happens in that time,
delete the file.

Re: 2 HUGE .TMP files - To Delete or NOT Delete...that is the ques

Tim,

Thanks for the info and the help.
I already thought about moving these files to the external hard drive where
I have PLENTY of room and then some. This way i can assume a "wait and see"
poster. If nothing bad happens...great. If something does go awry, I can
always move the files back. As usual, the "common sense" approach is always
best. Thanks again...

*.tmp files are not needed. Delete them. If they won't delete, it might be
something keeping them in use, so delete asap after a bootup sometimes makes
it work. Or you could try deleting them from Safe Mode.

*.tmp are "temporary" files, not needed files after the session ends.

If they won't delete, come on back with the exact error messages.

RE: 2 HUGE .TMP files - To Delete or NOT Delete...that is the ques

Edsoli2k,
I found these files as a result of running the disk defragmenter and reading
the final report that tool generates. But, prior to running defrag, I ran the
Disk Clean Up tool as you recommend...which, apparently, did not delete these
files.

I have an external hard drive with plenty of room on it. I'm going to move
these files to that hard drive and see what happens. If all runs well, then
I'll eventually delete them.

What I'd really like to know is what program created these files so I can
take some preventative measures to avoid this from happening again.

I have never had a problem deleting TMP files as long as the creation
date of the files is prior to today.

Re: 2 HUGE .TMP files - To Delete or NOT Delete...that is the ques

Thanks Bill for the input and info..much appreciated. I just wish I knew what
program was creating and continually adding to these files. It's a pc that
belongs to a client and I'd like to resolve this mystery for her once and for
all so that this particular issue won't continually require attention.

I heard of an executable file called filemon.exe available (for free) from
www.sysinternals.com . Supposedly, this executable file can help keep track
of what programs use certain files...and, supposedly, this executable is also
said to have a customizable filter which, if used properly, can assist in
narrowing the focus (and thus, the results) that are relevant only to a
certain file or group of files.

I am returning to my client's place tomorrow and will try downloading and
running this tool then. If nothing else, I will move these tmp files over to
her external hard drive and wait and see how the machine runs without them.
But, like I said, I'd really like to find the source that created these files
so I can address the cause and just not the symptom.

Best,
Mark
