taskbar - too many sections

A taskbar typically has four sections:

start | quick launch | currently open | system tray

Sometimes, mine has more than one "currently open" sections. I can
close all of them but two, essentially having an extra "currently
open" section occupying the precious real estate.

Why does this happen and how to cure the problem? Thanks.

This is on an IBM Thinkpad.

That's an odd one. Try right-clicking in the region of the extra "currently
open" section > Toolbars
and see which toolbars have ticks by them

I can't quite visualise the problem you are trying to explain.
However, if you go to Start>Settings>Taskbar and Start Menu, try checking or
unchecking "Group Similar Taskbar Buttons".
