BETA equates to "not final version".

Personally - I would not recommend running this on any machine you value the
data on/don't have a backup of you can revert to in short notice. Although
it is out in the world now - for public consumption -

In other words: You install at your own risk - even more than you would if
it was a 'final' release - because then you would at least you might have
options to get some support if things went wrong.

(by myself) could not find a legitimate Microsoft download link - doesn't
mean there isn't one...

I believe it does originate from the big MS. Last I checked, release
candidate is the closest thing to final release and a beta is not a
release candidate quality product. All responsibility for failures or
damage from using a non-final product is always that of the tester.
Companies "leaking" out their beta software to see how it behaves in
the wild (or writes about it from the tech blogs) has become the norm.
You can't put the genie back in the bottle and knowledge wants to be
free.

On the above web site, only the vendor / author or company can put
the file there. At least, last I checked on the T's & C's of the site.

I have no problem with you posting it - I was just adding a warning.

Although generally 'Release Candidate' does mean it is closer to release
date - I have seen products go through several 'Release Candidate' releases
before going final - so this is *still* generally 'beta' in my mind - or to
be more accurate and use my own words: "not final version".

Yes, this is the situation with Server 2008. It was RC0 a bit ago and
is now RC1. I've seen things go RC3, server 2000 and XP SP2 did if I
recall. It ain't final til it's final.

Since the official beta download size is 70.6MB, what is the other
266MB in that download for? I've seen several SP3 downloads that
include cracked or pirated versions of software totally unrelated to
SP3 and some that included spyware. The official download is only 100
MB. The betanews download is 336MB. You go figure what the extra
crap is inside that download file.

When I got it from the Windows Update site, it was 70.6MB. However,
it probably checks what might be missing that should've been included
in SP-2 and downloads that to install it, too. The download file
which is a standalone install probably includes SP-2 and hotfixes
after that and probably accounts for the enlarged size of the download
file. However, a lot of the file would be superfluous to anyone that
already has SP-2 and the later updates installed.

I have no idea what that is but I have seen nothing documented or
otherwise stating that SP3 for XP is going to be anything less than
300+MB.

Already discussed over 9 hours ago. See my 2nd post yesterday (and
Gary's reply). It appears SP-2 is included. I forgot that service
packs are cumulative.
